  News from No Fear Bridge

Hello to all No Fear Bridge members and visitors.  I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.

What better way to spend a cold and dark evening than playing a few hands with friends and a glass of wine or testing your skill at the local bridge club.

As always we're here to help you improve your bridge.  In this newsletter we have a review of what's been added in 2011 and plans for 2012, plus a special New Year discount.

WHAT'S NEW AT NO FEAR BRIDGE

2011 has been a busy year for us. We continued to add new declarer and defence hands at all levels, including an new batch added to the menus this week. Now over 500 hands to play from the menus!

All the bidding practices have now been updated to the new format so they are available for all users include those with IPad. We are looking to convert the tutorials into a format suitable for IPad in 2012.

The end of the year also saw the launch of the 'Advancer Zone'. This area of the website is especially for advancing learners and improving club level players.

There are already 98 declarer hands and 42 defence hands in the Advancer Zone with suitable difficulty level to challenge the improving club player!

Also added to the Advancer Zone are a number of Slam Bidding topics including Cue Bidding. To test your skill there are quizzes and bidding practice activities, all with feedback when you need it.

You can also print the hands as 'Partnership Bidding Practice' to try with your favourite partner!

If you haven't yet seen the latest activities, register now for your two week free trial.

(If you expired earlier in 2011 you will be able to re-register for another free trial)

 PLANS FOR 2012

Coming soon: New tutorials with audio on finessing, plus an interactive activity showing you the best way to play various suit combinations as declarer.

Later in the year we plan to add some great new material for beginners: tutorials with audio talking you through step by step how to plan the play as declarer and as defender.

Coming soon in the Advancer Zone will be more bidding topics including Competitive Bidding, Weak Twos and Two Suited Overcalls.

ARE YOU A GOOD DEFENDER?

When you play bridge in your class, at home or at your club do you look forward to being declarer but get disappointed if you end up defending?

Do you play the No Fear Bridge Declarer Hand of the Day but never play the Defence Hands?

It pays to work on your defence. Remember, you will be Declarer on average 1 in every 4 hands but you will be defending on average 1 in every 2 hands!

Not only that, but when you play a hand at a typical club duplicate session of 24 boards, EACH hand makes an equal contribution to your final percentage (a 'Top' score being worth about 4%). Can you truly say that you give as equal attention to defending a 2 part score as when you're declarer in a 6NT slam?! Remember both hands make an equal contribution to your final percentage!

There are over 60 defence hands at level 1 - 3 (plus 40 at advancer level) in the member's site. Why not try some? You will be guided through the thought process for the correct defence and even get feedback when you don't choose the best play!

Improve your defence skills and not only will you enjoy defending more but you will be a popular partner!

Make 2012 the year you become a better defender.

TIP OF THE DAY

Finding a 5-3 Major Suit fit After Partner's No Trump Rebid

After an opening bid of 1or 1, a No Trump rebid could be a balanced 5332 shape with a five card major. When we have three of partner's major it is often a good idea to check for a 5-3 major suit fit.

South
K J T 4 2
K 7 3
A 8 7
6 2
North East South West
1 Pass 1 Pass
1NT Pass 3 Pass
?

With our 11 points we could simply bid 3NT, but we are very weak in clubs. What if partner has five hearts (3532 or 3523 shape)?... or three spades?

We can explore further by bidding three of partner's major suit. 3 here is forcing to game and shows exacty 3 hearts, thus giving partner various options:

North 1
Q 2
A Q J 7 3
K Q 6
J 4 3

With hand 1, North will bid 4 knowing of an 8-card heart fit.

North 2
Q 2
A Q J 7
K 7 6
K 9 8 3

With hand 2, North will bid 3NT with no fit.

North 3
Q 6 2
A Q J 7
K Q 7 6
J 3

With hand 3, North will bid 3 to explore a 5-3 spade fit (from North's point of view South may have 4 or 5 spades). This puts the decision back to South who will bid 3NT with only 4 spades or 4 with 5 spades.
